The YMCA of Greater New York is the largest youth-serving organization in New York City, serving more than 175,000 kids and teens and 175,000 adults each year through its 21 branches and 180 sites in the five boroughs of New York City, plus three upstate camps.

The Cross Island YMCA’s Beacon Center is seeking qualified candidates who will assist in the successful operation of all sports programs, as well as the Teen Center. The Sports Instructor will be responsible for establishing league play; organizing sports activities, and assisting youth and teen participants in increasing the amount of physical activity in which they participate each week. The Sports Instructor will serve as a resource for participants to achieve exercise goals, skill goals and a sense of well being.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee and run all educational programs and sport activities for youth and teen participants.

• Provide program instruction that matches participants’ strengths, assessing challenges and offering guidance for improvement.

• Orient new participants to the policies and procedures of the Beacon Center.

• Maintain clean, safe and orderly work area at all times.

• Ensure the health, safety and well being of children in the program by providing close supervision of all activities.

• Help to create an environment that is diverse, culturally sensitive and relevant to the needs of youth and teens.

• Project a professional and healthy image through dress, behavior and attitude.

• Assist in organizing outreach events for sports programs and Teen Center.

• Adhere to all Department of Health, Department of Youth and Community Development, and YMCA of Greater New York standards.

• Actively participate in all training sessions and designated meetings and special events.

• Attend the minimum required 40 hours of staff training during the school year, including Saturday trainings.

• Additional responsibilities as asked by direct supervisor or other Directors.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma; some college in sports-related topics preferred.

• Experience teaching various sports to youth and planning sports activities.

• Good organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.

• First Aid/CPR certifications a plus.
